Napoli comfortably beat German Champions Bayern Munch at the Allianz on Wednesday. Goals from Kalidou Koulibaly and Emanuele Giaccherini secured the win for the Italians.
After losing out to Liverpool in the Audi Cup opener on Tuesday, Bayern Munich had the chance to make amends against Napoli in Wednesday's early kick-off at the Allianz Arena.
The first shot on goal came from Kingsley Coman, who found a pocket of space inside the Napoli area but his strike was comfortable for goalakeeper Luigi Sepe. Bayern Munich looked lively in the opening 10 minutes with more chances coming for Joshua Kimmich and Arturo Vidal.
Napoli's first opening came through José Callejón. The former Real madrid man was released past the napoli defence by a neat flick, but 17-year-old Bayern Munich goalkeeper Christian Früchtl was quick off his line to make the save.
The Italian side took the lead after 16 minutes. After a Napoli free-kick was delivered dangerously into the Bayern box, the ball pinballed around until it arrived at the feet of Kalidou Koulibaly, who made no mistake and smashed the ball into the Bayern net.
The Germans were unlucky not to draw level mid way through the half after they had a goal incorrectly disallowed for offside. Manuel Wintzheimer was played in over the top of the Napoli defence and he tucked in at the near post. Replays showed that the youngster was clearly onside.
Napoli made a number of changes at the break but quickly found their rhythm again in the second half. On the 56th minute the Italians doubled their advantage, the ball was squared to Emanuele Giaccherini on the Bayern penalty spot and had enough time to take a touch and compose himself before unleashing a strike into the bottom left corner.
Bayern Munich were seriously lacking creativity throughout the game as they struggled to break through the Napoli back line. Changes for both sides mid way though the second half interrupted the flow of the match and the game fizzled out with chances few and far between.
Despite conceding twice, 17-year-old goalkeeper Früchtl made a series of stunning saves. Another stand out performance came from Napoli's Koulibaly who got himself on the score sheet and had a very solid game at the heart of the defence.
The German Champions will be very disappointed with the result but now will turn their attentions to their German Super Cup clash with Borussia Dortmund. Napoli, on the other hand, will be delighted with their performance and will go into the new Serie A campaign with confidence.
