Manchester United made it six games without a victory for Pep Guardiola as Juan Mata's second half goal took Manchester United through to the quarter finals of the EFL Cup.
Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola approached the game in different manners as the former opted for a full strength side while the latter decided to give run-outs to youngsters Pablo Maffeo and Aleix Garcia.
It was a match of very few chances and would certainly not be classed as a classic Manchester derby.
However, despite being dull in large parts, the match got off to a lively start and Mourinho was almost cursing his luck - and his players - within the first minute of the game. Jesus Navas went down the right in the first minute and crossed for Iheanacho who could only guide his close range header over the bar.
That was as good as it got for the first half in terms of chances, but thankfully, the second period livened up. Slightly.
In the 49th minute, Willy Caballero had to save the first shot on target in the entire game when he brilliantly tipped an effort from Paul Pogba onto the post.
United didn't have to wait long for their goal, though, as Juan Mata sweeped Zlatan Ibrahimovic's pass past Caballero, which would ultimately be the winning goal.
Once Mourinho's men went ahead, they never looked like losing and they didn't allow Man City an inch for the rest of the game.
Manchester United go through to the quarter finals and partially repair some of the damage caused by Chelsea on Sunday, while Guardiola goes six games without a win for the first time in his managerial career.
